What is Bowenwork® Therapy?

The art of Bowenwork is somewhere between the art of Zen calligraphy and Homeopathic medicine. The practitioner must strive to do the minimum of moves or procedures to trigger in the body the desired self healing response. Doing too many mobilizations could actually be counteractive. The more sick the client is or the more acute the condition is, the less is done during the session and the less pressure will be used to do the moves, the more profound the effect will be on the body. One motto of the technique is "Less is more" and the therapist must sense when enough has been done.

Bowenwork is called Bowtech in other countries (outside of the United States). It is sometimes referred to as Bowen Therapy in general, although both Bowenwork and Bowtech are trademarked names. Bowenwork/Bowtech are the most prevalent form of the technique, as taught under the auspices of Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia (BTAA). Over 30,000 practitioners, in more than 30 countries around the world have been trained under the BTAA.

 BOWENWORK THERAPY IS HOLISTIC

BOWENWORK is an essential tool to facilitate whole body healing. BOWENWORK moves enable incredible results by activating the body’s own ability to heal itself; therefore stimulating an immediate healing process. This process is not limited to the presenting physical symptom but extends to the emotional, cognitive, and spiritual aspects of the individual client.

After a short interview, the client will be invited to lie down on a massage table although the session can be done sitting on a chair if the client for whatever reason cannot lie down on a prone or supine position. There is no need to undress, the moves can be done through thin and loose clothing although skin contact is often preferable.

A typical session starts with the administration of 3 basic sequences of moves to rebalance the lower back/sacrum, upper back and neck region. This basic recipe addresses the whole body and most conditions presented. To this general basic rebalancing, the practitioner can choose to add a few more specific procedures to address a particular problem. All the mobilizations are gentle and non invasive. Often moves will be synchronized with the client's breath.

The initial reaction of clients used to other modalities using deep probing, rubbing, stretching or manipulating may be to wonder if anything has been done or if the session will have any effect on them but very often they will quickly experience a deep sense of general relaxation. The entire process is so soothing that it is not uncommon for clients to fall asleep during the session. They often report feelings of energy release and relief following a move.

There are frequent pauses during the session, these are important to give time for the body to respond to the moves. During these pauses it is common that the practitioner leaves the room to let the client rest quietly. During the session small talk is not encouraged, as everything done by the practitioner and the general ambiance of the treatment room (quiet or soft music, comfortable room temperature, etc.) should invite relaxation.
